Classroom Music at
Strathpine State School

In the Junior school, Prep – Year 3, classroom music is entirely practical.  Each class attends one 30 minute music lesson with Mrs Powell each week.  Lessons are a combination of singing, moving to music, playing percussion instruments and basic music reading.  The concepts of beat and rhythm are the major focus.

The Senior school also attend one 30 minute music lesson per class.  Lessons consist of a variety of activities which can include:

Extra-curricular activities

CHOIR

There are 2 choirs –

·         Junior Choir Years 2&3 practise one big lunch per week

·         Senior Choir Years 4-7 practise one big lunch and one before school (8.15) session per week

Both choirs perform regularly on assemblies.  Several times a year they perform outside of school, at shows, shopping centres, flea markets and fetes.  Both choirs enter the Queensland Youth Music Awards in May.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

From Year 5 children have the opportunity to learn a specific instrument with our Instrumental Music Teacher Scott King.  Lessons are weekly in small groups during class time.  Instruments include a variety of woodwind, brass and percussion.

BAND

Our school concert band consists of instrumental music students from Years 6 and 7.  They practise one before school session each week and perform at school assemblies, shows, and competitions.

PERFORMING ARTS

Our school very actively encourages performing.  We regularly have a creative selection of performances at school assemblies by all ages of children including singing, dancing and drama.  School concerts are on a 2 year cycle, even years are theme based concerts and odd years and Christmas Concerts.  We now have our concert in two sections - junior and senior due to the size of the school.  We also have an informal talent show in the last week of school where children get to show off their talents in all the performing arts.
