2010 Single Classes

Next Wednesday night (11 November) at 6:00pm we will be holding a parent information session for our 2010 Year 7 single sex classes.  This is an opportunity to come along and find out how our trial has gone this year, the research supporting the single gender approach and how the classes operate.

After we have had the information night, our Year 6 teachers will meet to discuss the needs of each student, their preferred learning style and whether they would benefit from being in a mixed or single sex class.  Our teachers will then contact each parent to discuss our recommendation.

Last year this selection method proved to be extremely successful.  Some parents were still unsure at the beginning of last year but were willing to trust the teacher’s recommendations.  One of our parents will be speaking at our information session to share her feelings about the single sex classes.  By having the option of a traditional or single sex class we believe that we are able to effectively cater for all of our students needs.

E Block Refurbishment

Today I met with the builders who are doing the refurbishment of our Year 4 and 5 classes. These classes have already been recarpeted and will now be repainted, refurnished and operable walls will be placed in between each room.  With this national funding we will also be able to purchase 6 Interactive Whiteboards for the school and recarpet our Year 3 rooms and two of our Year 6 rooms. During this construction time we will need to relocate the classes to some of our spare rooms.  We will let you know more information shortly.

Gala Day

What a fantastic day! Our students had a great day playing touch football, newcombe and softball against Petrie State School.  It was wonderful to see all of the students engaged in physical activity and the degree of sportsmanship was outstanding.  Congratulations to all of our Year 6 and 7 students for their “superstar behaviour”.  A huge thank you to all of our teachers for their enthusiastic participation on the day and a special thank you to Mr Weeks for organising the event.

Help us win a staff room makeover!

Queensland Teachers' Credit Union is giving us the chance to win a makeover for our school staff room and we need your help to win!    The prize is a complete makeover of our school's staff room providing a relaxing environment for all our school staff to enjoy. The winning school will be the one with the most votes, so we need as much support from our local school community as possible.

Please support us and cast your vote by visiting staffroomforimprovement.com.au The more friends and family you can encourage to vote for the greater our chances of winning such a great bonus for your children's teachers.    Voting closes on Friday, 20 November 2009, so get voting today and help us win the ultimate staff room makeover.

Safe Travel

A reminder to all students to make sure that they follow the road rules as they travel home. Last week one of our students was almost hit by a car as they crossed the road against the lights on the corner of Buckby and Old Gympie Road.

Students who ride a bike home are reminded that helmets are compulsory and must be put on before they leave the school grounds.   The high school have asked that our students no longer ride through their school grounds.  This is a result of an unsafe incident that occurred last week. Students are now asked to ride their bikes around the high school grounds.

School Wide Positive Behaviours

This week in our classrooms our teachers will be focusing on the core value of Cooperation.  Our “5Cs” are a part of our School Wide Positive Behaviour Program. Cooperation represents acknowledging the bell by:

·         stopping play immediately

·         quickly getting drinks, going to the toilet

·         moving to the correct area as soon as possible

Prep – Year 3 Swimming

Students in Prep to Year 3 classes will commence their swimming program consisting of 9 lessons on Tuesday 17th November. It will conclude on Thursday December 3. All lessons will be held at the Lawnton Pool. All children will require a swimming costume, sunscreen, bathing cap and towel to be carried in a swimming bag. The wearing of a bathing cap is compulsory. The total cost of $58.50 for the swimming program will cover the cost of the bus fare, pool entry and instruction. For parents who pay the total cost up front, children will receive a free swimming cap.

Gala Day

The first Gala Day was conducted at school last Friday with our school competing against Petrie State School. It was a huge success with students in Year 6 and 7 participating in newcombe, softball and mixed touch games throughout the day. The games were played in a competitive but friendly spirit with all students from both schools coming together for a barbecue for lunch. Congratulations go to Mr Weeks for his organisation and coordination of this wonderful event as well as all the Year 6 and Year 7 teachers and specialist staff for their support and participation. The next and final Gala Day will be held at Petrie State School on Friday 20 November.

District Oz Tag  Gala Day

A group of Year 7 girls and boys participated in the ARL Development Interschool League Tag Gala Day this week. It was held at the Les Hughes Sports Complex and   involved a large number of schools. Our school was very successful with both the boys and girls teams winning a number of games. Many thanks to Mr Patayon and Mr Weeks for training the students for the event and to the students who represented our school with pride.

Classroom Visits

Last week I was invited to visit our two Year 1 classes to look at the children’s art work. I  was extremely impressed with their “Alien” figures which showed creativity and thoughtful design using a range of art materials.

YEAR 5 CAMP REPORTS

Last week, the Year 5s went to Mapleton Camp.  It was lots of fun and the activities were challenging.  We all did canoeing, giant wing, archery, climbing wall, orienteering, swimming and sports.  On Tuesday after we settled in to the Harrison Lodge we went for a swim.  After that we played T-ball and had showers.  Before we went to bed we played games with Mrs Peasey like Links, Winks and the Shoe Game.  On Wednesday and Thursday we did all the paid activities.  On Wednesday night we played dancing games with Miss McNally.  On Thursday night we watched Daddy Daycare and The Croc Hunter.  On Friday morning we packed our bags, vacuumed our rooms and moved our luggage outside and had a scavenger hunt..  After the scavenger hunt we had morning tea and went for a swim.  After our swim we had lunch and went home.  We arrived at school at 2.30pm.  Then we went home for the weekend.  Corey 5R

Last week on Tuesday Year 5 went to Mapleton Camp.  It took 1 hour and 15 minutes to go to camp and we  watched ‘Daddy Day Care’ on the way.  When we arrived we had to go to our cabins and decide who sleeps where.  After we went to play T-ball and Newcombe.  We ate lunch and went back to our lodge.  At night we played some games and then went to sleep.  Next morning we went for a walk down to the park and then went back.  We ate breakfast then started our activities.  We started Archery then Canoeing and then Orienteering.  After a big day we came back played some games and went to sleep.  Next morning we went to the park again and then came back, ate breakfast and started our new activities.  We did Rockclimbing, Nature House and Giant Swing.  At night we watched movies then went to sleep.  In the morning we woke up, packed, went for a walk then came back, ate breakfast, came back and cleaned our lodge.  We then went swimming, ate lunch then went back to school.  Andrew 5B.

Last week the Year 5s went on a fantastic field trip to Mapleton Camp site.  Every day we did something new and exciting which made us collapse on our beds every night.  Almost everyone’s favourite activity was the Giant Swing which was terrifying but fun.  It had two water slides and I zoomed down them both.  So if you go to Mapleton Camp you will have the bet time every.  Amber 5B

REMEMBRANCE DAY

3J’s Community Project for 2009 is collecting donations for Remembrance Day Poppies.

When World War I ended poppies began growing in the fields where the battles had been.  The idea of having a poppy flower for remembrance started then.  On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month we remember all those who have died in battle.

Members of 3J will come to your classroom to exchange a donation for a poppy.  All the money collected will be presented to the Nashos.  We ask for you to support 3Js project.  Thank you.   Amanda Jarvis

TSUNAMI THANK YOU
